A Vital Matters Perspective: A Call for Traditional Ecological Knowledge as a Framework for Climate Resilience
A Call for Traditional Ecological Knowledge as a Framework for Climate Resilience
Patrisse Cullors reflects on being displaced for six weeks with her family and animals after the January fires, an experience that deepened her frustration with elected officials’ lack of urgency around climate change and land stewardship. Motivated to take action, she partnered with Lauren Bon of Metabolic Studio—who was also displaced—and agreed that any meaningful effort had to center Indigenous leadership. They connected with the Gabrielino Shoshone Nation, including Marcos Aguilar of Anawakalmekak and Vice Chair Gabrielle Crowe, to ask for collaboration in advancing traditional ecological knowledge as a framework for climate resilience. Their goal is to push the city and county to prioritize climate resilience by honoring Indigenous wisdom and land-based practices.
