A Vital Matters Perspective: Sound as a Spiritual Tool
Sound as a Spiritual Tool
Patrisse Cullors shares how she uses sound as a powerful spiritual tool to connect people to something deeper within themselves. Drawing from the Ifá tradition, she explains the importance of music, prayer, and the richness of the Yoruba language, which carries layered tones and sacred sounds. In her installation in The House Was Too Small, she wanted visitors to enter the altar room and feel as though they were stepping into a shrine—immersed in prayer, rhythm, and spiritual presence. To create this experience, she co-produced an eight-to-ten-minute looping soundscape. Cullors also invited members of her Ifá community to send recordings of their prayers, weaving their voices together into a collective and deeply moving audio piece that filled the altar space with sacred intention.
