A Vital Matters Perspective: Kombit Mutual Aid Systems
Kombit Mutual Aid Systems
Mamyrah Dougé-Prosper explores kombit as a longstanding system of mutual aid rooted in African traditions and sustained through the violent disruptions of slavery, colonialism, and their aftermath. She explains how this collective labor practice, where communities work together and share resources, became a means of survival and resistance on plantations, especially when enslavers withheld basic necessities. Rather than fading over time, kombit evolved alongside Haiti’s shifting social landscape, remaining vital as people carried these communal traditions into urban settings where state support was lacking and self-organization became essential for survival.
