A Vital Matters Perspective: Geographies of the Wixárika Community
Geographies of the Wixárika Community
Cyndy García Weyandt explores how a Wixárika yarn painting represents multiple emerging worlds, drawing on both the artist José Benítez Sánchez’ inscription and participant interpretations. The painting illustrates the creation of distinct worlds, such as the ancestors’ world in the North and the Center where the mara’kame and Blue Deer meet. By tracing symbolic elements like animals, viewers navigate these layered spaces. Over time, García Weyandt shifted her own reading of the work, recognizing how perspective shapes the understanding of ceremonial and cosmological storytelling.
