Cosas que Sangran

MUSEUM LABEL

DESCRIPTION

Tanya Aguiñiga’s Cosas que Sangran attests to the striking variations in colors obtained from cochineal ,the world’s most valued and sought-after natural red, an insect-derived dye. The differences in colors and hues seen in this work are achieved by altering the pH balance of the cochineal dye mix, usually by adding acid, such as lemon juice, or alkaline, such as lime (calcium hydroxide). For the weaving, Aguiñiga used a combination of hand-knotting, knitting, and braiding, combining cotton rope, cord, and flax fiber she dyed with cochineal.

This Vital Matters was produced in collaboration with the Center for Religion and Cities at Morgan State University.
