Artist Residencies as Conversation
Audrey Lopez describes the residencies of Tanya Aguiñiga and Porfirio Gutiérrez as a “natural continuation of a conversation” about migration and community building. Lopez highlights their 2022 residency in Teotitlán del Valle, where the artists used found objects such as water jugs and children’s T-shirts to “flip the model” and create a sense of freedom through play. This collaborative experience led to deeper changes in their artistic practices and eventually inspired works like Gutiérrez's The Hours That I Walked.
