A Vital Matters Perspective: The Story of Oshun and Affirmation of the Essential Role of Women in Ifá
The Story of Oshun and Affirmation of the Essential Role of Women in Ifá
Patrisse Cullors reflects on the story and significance of Oshun, the river goddess in the Yoruba and Ifá traditions. Known as the deity of love, pleasure, sweetness, healing, and children, Oshun is one of the most widely recognized orishas. Cullors explains that Oshun is unique as the only female Irunmole—a primordial deity who was never human—sent to Earth to help create the world alongside other orishas. According to the story, the other deities dismissed and underestimated her, and as a result, they were unable to complete the work of creation. After Oshun appealed to Olodumare, the supreme deity, the others were reprimanded and told they could accomplish nothing without her. Once Oshun was included, creation flourished. Cullors interprets this story as a powerful reflection on the consequences of excluding women and a spiritual affirmation of women’s essential role, challenging patriarchal dynamics within both tradition and society.
