Co-Founder and Leader of an Artistic Community

Cyndy García Weyandt describes José Benítez Sánchez as both a respected artist and community leader in Zitakua, a neighborhood he co-founded in Tepic for Wixárika artists. His vision created a ceremonial space within the city, allowing families to continue traditional practices. As a spiritual leader and teacher, Benítez not only produced influential yarn paintings but also trained many artists, including his own children. Today, over ten families continue his artistic tradition, honoring his lasting impact on both Wixárika art and community life.
