A Vital Matters Perspective: Calling on the Orishas Over Time
Calling on the Orishas Over Time
Patrisse Cullors reflects on the different orishas she has called upon throughout her life for protection, guidance, and healing. She shares that for many years she prayed to Oya, a warrior orisha who taught her about protection and the importance of safeguarding oneself, family, and community. She also speaks about Obatala, explaining that in Ifá belief, taboos often stem from sacred stories; because Obatala once became intoxicated and harmed his creation of human beings, those considered children of Obatala are traditionally forbidden from drinking. More recently, she shares that she prays to Orunmila, the great teacher of Ifá, who was given the sacred palm seeds (Ikin) and the wisdom of divination through the Odu.
