BIOGRAPHY
Luciana (Maymi) Benítez Rentería was born December 29, 1987 in Nayarit. Her Wixarika name is Maybeme (Maymi for short) was given to her affectionately by her father, José Benítez Sánchez, internationally acclaimed Wixarika artist. She became interested in Wixárika yarn painting at the age of eight and began helping her father with his artwork and her visions became inspired by the places where her father took her, without knowing that they were sacred places. She dreamt frequently without knowing why. Each day a different dream until she understood that those dreams needed to be represented so that people can see that we have an interior spirit and that we can communicate through plants and animals. She needed to show that her peoples’ Gods are always present. Her works are exhibited in galleries in Puerto Vallarta, Michoacán, Mexico City, the United States, France, and New Zealand. She continues to produce her yarn paintings from her father’s famed workshop in the Zitakua neighborhood in Tepic, Nayarit.
