Hilaria Chávez Carrillo is Wixárika from the community of Naranjito de Copal in the Municipality of El Nayar, Nayarit, Mexico. She married famed artist, José Benítez Sánchez and had five children with him, dedicating herself to creating nierika yarn paintings with Benítez until his death in 2004. Currently, Chávez continues to create yarn paintings alongside her children. They proudly carry on the unique style that marked her late husband’s work. Her art can be found in galleries in Puerto Vallarta, Tepic, Mexico City and France.
