The Painted Stone of the Moon Goddess Coyolxauhqui

Helen Burgos-Ellis explains that the Coyolxauhqui stone was originally painted, though only traces of color remain today. Art historian Carmen Aguilera began studying these pigments in 1978 to determine the original hues. Veronica’s choice to paint the stone in her artwork honors that history, reminding us that the sculpture was never meant to be seen as bare stone.
