A Vital Matters Perspective: Supporting Madres de Juárez
Supporting Madres de Juárez
Verónica Castillo recalls the emotional weight of working with a group of women to create The Tree of Death and other sculptures to raise funds for the mothers of Juárez, who sought justice for their murdered daughters. She reflects on how the process of reliving their pain was difficult for everyone involved, but also transformative, teaching her to approach such work with more compassion and care. Though some have offered her money to recreate the piece, she refuses, saying she will not profit from others’ suffering; with her parents’ blessing, she continues creating powerful, unique works that give voice to important stories.
