Coyolxauhqui and the Discovery of the Stone at the Temple Mayor

In this video, Helen Burgos-Ellis explores the myth of the Aztec moon goddess Coyolxauhqui and the discovery of her stone at the Templo Mayor in 1978. She explains how colonial texts preserved Coyolxauhqui’s story, in which she is slain by her brother Huitzilopochtli. The unearthing of her carved stone confirmed her importance in Aztec culture and revealed key insights into Mesoamerican mythology, manuscript traditions, and the symbolic layout of the sacred temple site in Mexico City.
