Jain Understandings of Time

Jains view time as an eternal, cyclical process composed of immense cosmic arcs, with no beginning or end to the universe itself—only changes in the quality of time. We currently live in a descending cycle called Avasarpiṇī, marked by moral and spiritual decline. At the start of such a cycle, life was blissful and effortless, but as time decays, suffering increases and liberation (moksha) becomes impossible. Despite this, Jainism emphasizes the importance of community and devotion (bhakti) as powerful tools for spiritual growth in an age when liberation cannot be attained, offering support and purpose during this challenging era.
