Gender, the Lwa, and the Limits of Academic Frameworks

Mamyrah Dougé-Prosper explores the gender dynamics within Vodou spirituality, focusing on the prominent placement of Brijit, a female lwa, at the center of a composition traditionally dominated by Bawon Samdi, a male spirit often seen as the most important of the Gede lwas. She questions how scholarly interpretations, influenced by heteropatriarchal perspectives, may have imposed a male-centered hierarchy onto Vodou beliefs. By considering Brijit’s central role, Dougé-Prosper invites reflection on how these spiritual representations might challenge existing power structures and gestures toward a future where female energy and leadership are foregrounded.
