Modern, Contemporary and Wixárika Art

Ingrid Arriaga reflects on how Wixárika art, though rooted in tradition, is inherently contemporary as it continues to evolve. Unlike much contemporary art, Wixárika works don’t question tradition or address political struggles. However, in mid-20th century Mexico, José Benítez Benítez' yarn paintings aligned with national shifts toward abstraction and mythology in art. His work blended seamlessly into broader Mexican artistic movements, showing that Indigenous artists were not isolated but actively contributing to Mexico’s evolving modern art scene.
