Strategic Placement of Moche Ritual and Urban Centers

Solsiré Cusicanqui recounts her early archaeological experience excavating a Moche settlement in the desert of northern Peru. She reflects on how these communities strategically located ritual and urban centers in dry areas that offered visibility over agricultural valleys, rivers and the sea. She highlights the Moche's sophisticated irrigation systems, territorial planning, and placement of settlements in elevated, strategic locations to oversee their surroundings.
