The Ephemeral Nature of Sand Paintings

Museums have historically focused on extending the life of artworks through possession, which often severed their relationship with living communities. Daisy Ocampo Diaz contrasts this preservation model with the ephemeral nature of ceremonial sand paintings, where spaces are built and then intentionally torn down. She visualizes Lazaro Arvizu Jr.’s piece, Sand Acknowledgement, through her grandmother’s teachings of saying a prayer and letting it go.
