The Ethics of Display

Will Rea discusses the ethical and historical issues surrounding the display of African art in European and American museums. He argues that questions of provenance, ownership, and repatriation are essential, particularly in cases such as the Benin bronzes. Using an object associated with the British Empire Exhibition as an example, he suggests that museums can use such works to explore broader debates about empire, colonialism, race, identity, and representation. Rea emphasizes that while these objects may have complex histories spanning multiple locations, their African origins and cultural connections should remain central to their interpretation.
