Re-thinking the Benefits of Fire Suppression
Char Miller argues for reexamining long-standing traditions of fire suppression. While such policies have historically safeguarded property, capital, and urban areas, they have failed to protect the land itself. He advocates for a collaborative approach, in which contemporary land managers learn directly from Indigenous fire managers through shared practice. Miller suggests that this cooperation can gradually reshape fire management traditions into a co-integrated system that better supports ecological health.
