José Benítez Sánchez Explaining his Works through Inscriptions

Ingrid Arriaga describes how José Benítez Sánchez included handwritten inscriptions on the backs of many of his yarn paintings to explain their meanings. Often written first in Wixárika and then in Spanish, these texts served as mediations for viewers unfamiliar with the cultural and spiritual significance of the images. This practice, which began with earlier artists like Ramón Medina and Pedro de la Cruz, reflects Benítez’s awareness that his art needed context to be fully understood by audiences outside his community.
