Neither Commodified Nor Owned: The Ephemerality of Sand Acknowledgement

Lazaro Arvizu Jr. intended for Sand Acknowledgement to be an active, ephemeral piece meant to ignite a collective moment of dialogue and community. Daisy Ocampo Diaz explains that his primary focus was honoring his community protocols by letting the artwork exist naturally within its intended lifespan. Diaz views this approach as a form of institutional critique and an active refusal to let the piece be commodified or owned by the museum beyond its purpose in the Fire Kinship exhibition.
