The Art of Critical Fabulation and Colonial History
Alana Joy Okonkwo explores how critical fabulation can be used to examine identity, memory, and colonial history through museum objects. Focusing on a carved gourd in the collection of the Fowler Museum, she reflects on how objects can hold different understandings of culture, nationhood, and belonging depending on their histories and uses. The discussion considers how colonialism shaped ideas of “Nigeria” and how museum collections can reveal layered identities that extend beyond modern national borders. Through creative interpretation, the piece invites audiences to consider the multiple meanings objects carry and the stories that traditional historical labels may leave untold.
