Training, Techniques, and the Market for Yarn Painting

Cyndy García Weyandt describes how José Benítez Sánchez’ artistic process in Zitakua inspired a community-wide tradition. As visions guided his large yarn paintings, Benítez relied on family and neighbors to help with preparation and production, teaching them techniques like outlining designs on waxed wood and layering yarn. His influence created an active art market where many families continue this practice today. Through apprenticeships and workshops, his methods and artistic vision shaped Zitakua’s identity as a hub for Wixárika yarn painting.
