Art Markets and Audiences for Yarn Painting

Ingrid Arriaga explains that José Benítez Sánchez, like many Wixárika artists, created yarn paintings for foreign audiences as both an act of sharing and economic necessity. While offerings are reserved for the gods, yarn paintings—often featuring ancestral mythologies—are made for outsiders, who can provide money (tumíini), something ancestors do not offer. Benítez’ understood the responsibility of sharing these spiritually significant images beyond his community, balancing cultural tradition with the practical needs of modern life.
