Reflections on the Commission: A Curatorial Perspective

Curator Katherine Smith recounts the journey of acquiring Haiti, Madi 12 Janvye 2010 for the Fowler Museum’s exhibition In Extremis. After first seeing the unfinished piece in 2011, the museum funded its completion and later purchased it. Myrlande Constant’s commitment to creative integrity is evident—she revised colors, restarted sections, and even added final elements after the work was installed. Smith highlights Constant’s meticulous process and unwavering dedication to ensuring every detail aligned with her vision, even when it meant taking more time and care.
