Ceremonial Space and the Function of the Drapo

Kyrah Malika Daniels explains the ceremonial importance of drapo (Vodou flags), which are traditionally danced around the poto mitan during initiations like kanzo. Those who carry them, known as kò drapo—“the body of the flag”—bring spiritual energy into ritual space. While a work of this scale wouldn’t be danced, Myrlande Constant’s intricate use of beadwork and sequins evokes the movement and sacred meaning that define these ceremonial traditions.
