Painting with Beads and Light

Katherine Smith and Jerry Philogene explore how Myrlande Constant “paints” with beads and sequins rather than traditional pigments. Instead of representing light, Constant works with it directly—using reflective materials to animate her figures. Her careful placement of color, texture, and outline mirrors the techniques of painting while evoking Haiti’s multiracial identity. Through layered surfaces and shimmering light, Constant creates a dynamic visual language that challenges the boundaries between painting, craft, and spiritual storytelling.
