A Vital Matters Perspective: Visualizing the Sacred and the Potency of Place
Visualizing the Sacred and the Potency of Place
Lynna R. Dhanani explains that visual representations of sacred sites like Ashtāpada serve not only as reminders of place but as powerful tools in devotional practice. In Jain tradition, especially from the medieval period onward, visualization and mantra became ways to spiritually access these sites. Merely seeing or imagining a sacred site could confer spiritual benefits, as if one had actually gone there. These images help embed the site and its associated figures—like the Jinas—deeply in the practitioner’s mind, strengthening their connection and enhancing the efficacy of their religious practice.
