A Vital Matters Perspective: Replications and the Diffusion of Pilgrimage Site I
Replications and the Diffusion of Pilgrimage Site Imagery
Jain pilgrimage sites are represented and replicated across temples in India and the diaspora. These sacred locations—where Jinas and their disciples achieved liberation—are often recreated through paintings, choḍ paṭas, or miniature three-dimensional models made of marble, metal, or other materials. Such representations serve as microcosms of sacred geography, allowing devotees to connect with important pilgrimage sites like Shatrunjaya, Ashtāpada, and Sammed Shikhar, even when far from the physical locations themselves.
