Wixáritari: People of Place, Mobility and Ancestral Belonging

Diana Negrín da Silva introduces the Wixárika people, an Indigenous community from Mexico’s Western Sierra Madre Highlands in Jalisco, Nayarit, and Durango. Their sacred lands, however, extend far beyond these regions, with pilgrimage and ritual journeys connecting them to sites across Mexico. Speaking the Wixárika language, part of the Uto-Aztec linguistic family, the Wixárika people maintain deep ties to both their ancestral homelands and distant sacred sites, embodying a cultural identity rooted in movement, territory, and spiritual connection.
