Seeing Speech: Visualizing Communication

Cyndy García Weyandt discusses how lines emerging from figures in a Wixárika yarn painting represent communication and energy exchange. Drawing from José Benítez Sánchez’ writings, she explains that these lines—extending from mouths, foreheads, and hands—symbolize language shared between humans and more-than-human beings. In particular, the Blue Deer and mara’kame are shown in active conversation, illustrating the deep spiritual dialogue that takes place during ceremony and across different realms of existence.
