A Different View of the Center: Drumming, Ceremony, and Offerings

Cyndy García Weyandt reflects on leading workshops where children interpreted a Wixárika yarn painting as a ceremonial scene. While adults often focus on the prominent Blue Deer and mara’kame, children were drawn to symbolic details—like a drum with a face, peyote cacti, and arrows—that suggested ritual offerings. These elements led them to recognize the piece as depicting a moment of ceremony, rich with connections between humans, more-than-humans, animals, plants, and community. Their observations highlight the cultural depth conveyed through iconography.
